Kinase Classification: Group AGC: Family AKT

Evolution

Akt is found across most eukaryotes, usually single copy, but with 3 members in vertebrates, Akt1, Akt2, Akt3. S. cerevisiae has 3 putative Akt or SGK homologs, YPK1/2 and SCH9, though their sequences are not definitively in either family. All three lack the characteristic Akt PH domain and have weakly-predicted C2 domains at their N termini.

Domain Structure

Akt proteins all have an N-terminal PH domain followed by a kinase domain with the typical AGC-group kinase C-terminal extension. The PH domain in Dictyostelium is cryptic, but detectable by remote homology methods.
